  • Geoffrey F. Cox Ph.D., Chairman
    Dr. Cox has over 35 years of pharmaceutical and biotechnology experience in a broad range of senior management positions in operations management, as a CEO and as a member of the board of public and private companies.

    In 1984, Dr. Cox joined Genzyme Corporation in the U.K. and then, in 1988, became Senior Vice President, Operations in the U.S. Dr. Cox later became Executive Vice President responsible for operations and the pharmaceutical, diagnostic and genetics business units of Genzyme. Prior to joining Genzyme, Dr. Cox was General Manager of the U.K. manufacturing operations for Gist-Brocades.

    In 1997, Dr. Cox became Chairman and CEO of Aronex Pharmaceuticals, Inc., based in The Woodlands, Texas, and subsequently, in July 2001, he became Chairman, President and CEO of GTC Biotherapeutics,Inc., based in Framingham, Massachusetts, a position he held until June 2010.

    In October 2011, Dr. Cox became a Partner in Red Sky Partners LLC, a life sciences advisory company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

    Dr. Cox serves as a Director on the Board of Biota Pharmaceuticals Inc. and as a Director on the Board of QLT Inc. He is also a Director of Gallus Biopharmaceuticals. He is the immediate past Chairman of the Board of MassBio, the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council and also served for a number of years on the Board of the Biotechnology Industry Organization and as a member of their Emerging Companies Section and Healthcare Section Governing Body Committees.

    Dr. Cox received a B.Sc.(Hons) in Biochemistry from the University of Birmingham, U.K. and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of East Anglia, U.K.

  • Jonathan Gelles, D.Phil.
    Dr. Gelles received his doctorate in physical organic chemistry from Oxford University and has been active in the health sciences investment community for many years.
  • Jack Keene, Ph.D.
    Dr. Keene is the James B. Duke Professor of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology where he founded the Center for RNA Biology in 1999. He served as chairman of the Department of Microbiology from 1992-2002 and as director of basic sciences for the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center from 1995-2003. 

    Dr. Keene's research focuses on the structure and function of RNA-binding proteins in mammalian cells and viruses. His recent work uses RNA-binding proteins for gene expression profiling using microarrays and other genomic methods in order to understand the organization and dynamics of messenger RNAs in organs and tumors. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Riverside, and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Washington, Seattle; his postdoctoral work was at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda before coming to Duke University in 1978.
  • Silvia Panigone, Ph.D.
    Dr Silvia Panigone has 16 years of international experience in both the pharmaceutical sector (Pharma & CRO), covering operational and management roles, as well as in the venture capitalist sector -- and is an investment director at a Swiss VC group. She is currently life science & healthcare consultant for BSI bank, part of Generali Group, where she manages the life science portfolio of BSI's private equity. She sits on the board of several biotech/medtech companies and is Senior Director at XOventure group. Silvia graduated in Biological Sciences with a PhD in Molecular Oncology.
  • Karen A. Scappaticci, Ph.D.
    Dr. Scappaticci is an Independent Board Director-Advisor to the Pharmaceutical Industry and Healthcare Organizations. Previously, she was Vice President of Clinical Operations at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. With over 22 years of experience in the business and development of pharmaceuticals, she has managed large strategic change initiatives and international pharmaceutical drug development programs and operations. Karen has personal experience in over 50 regulatory submissions for new drug NDAs and international filings, supplementary filings, and labeling. She has previously reviewed Clinical Phase I through III portfolios for pharmaceutical companies and is advising pharmaceutical start-up ventures. She also serves on the Boards of The Gaylord Hospital, Inc. and Families and Children Agency Inc. She holds a Ph.D. in neuropharmacology and an MBA in strategic management.

    Dr. Scappaticci's direct experience and expertise in pharmaceutical development processes, operations and markets, as well as her governance experience and strategic management skills, are valuable in addressing AlphaVax's immediate operational and manufacturing needs and in rebuilding the composite skills of the Board.
